Join us for a day of critical discussion and networkingâhelp impact the future of 20th-century heritage practice in the Nordic region!
The 20th Century Historic Thematic Framework (20cHTF) is a new tool developed by the Getty Conservation Institute and ICOMOS IS20C. Designed to assess and interpret 20th-century built heritage, the 20cHTF is vital to help us update and broaden how we designate heritage, ensuring it reflects the full complexity of the 20th centuryâan era of remarkable progress and humanity, but also the dawn of the Anthropocene.
This seminar emphasizes Nordic perspectives bringing together experts and practitioners from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Ă land, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and Denmark to examine how the 20cHTF can shape conservation practices and policy-making.
Together we will learn and discuss why and how to apply the 20cHTF in a Nordic context and discover Nordic perspectives on 20th-century heritage, with case studies and discussions led by regional experts.
The seminar is part of a larger Nordic ICOMOS initiative to bring together heritage professionals and explore 20th-century heritage in a Nordic context. It will be followed in 2027 by a workshop in Stockholm, where each country will present case studies aligned with the 20cHTF. Through collaborative analysis, the project will produce a digital Nordic supplement to the framework by December 2026, strengthening regional cooperation, advancing shared methodologies, and positioning Nordic modern heritage within global conservation discussions.

TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORIC THEMATIC FRAMEWORK (20cHTF)
In 2021, the Getty Conservation Institute, in collaboration with ICOMOSâ International Scientific Committee on 20th-Century Heritage (ISC20C), launched the Twentieth Century Historic Thematic Framework (20cHTF). The framework provides a structured approach to understanding the significance of modern heritage, linking physical sites with the global historical, social, and cultural movements that defined the 20th century.
The 20cHTF has quickly been put into use worldwideâserving as a catalyst for new national and local inventories, in education, UNESCO thematic surveys, and World Heritage processes. Designed as a flexible framework, it is global in scope but intended for critical adaptation and application in regional and local contexts. To date, it still lack broad recognition in a Nordic context. This project aims to address that gap.

ABOUT THE VENUE
The seminar will be held at the former LO-School in Helsingør, a listed building and architectural gem that embodies the values of the Scandinavian labor movement. A fitting backdrop for our discussions on 20th-century heritage.
Konventum, the former LO School (1969), stands as a testament to the political significance of the Danish workersâ movement in the 20th century. Designed by architects Karen and Ebbe Clemmensen together with J. Heger, the complex was built as a conference and education center to empower workers through knowledge and organization.
Its architecture, with its stimulating recreational environment, facilitates both formal and informal meetings, embodying the movementâs ideals of solidarity, collaboration, and social democracy.

Konventum (former LO-skolen) is situated at : Erling Jensens Vej 1, 3000 Helsingør
Helsingør is situated about 1 hour from Copenhagen.
To reach Konventum from Copenhagen Airport, take the Metro M2 to Nørreport St. (15 min, 8 stops), then the train to Helsingør St. (52 min, 11 stops), followed by bus 353 to Hellebo Park (9 min, 7 stops), and walk 6 minutes (400 meters) to Konventum.
The approximate cost is approximately 2×70 DKK.
Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at the airport.
